Sony Acknowledges "External Intrusion" As Cause of PSN Shut Down

If you have tried to log on to Playstation Network as of late-Wednesday, you may have been greeted with an error message similar to the one above. (Stating the servers are undergoing maintenance) This is not just for the American Playstation Network, there are reports of users in Australia, and Japan, encountering issues as well.

Patrick Seybold, Playstation's Top Spokesman, has said the online service has been taken offline "to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services." It has not been said when the Network would continute operating as usual.

"We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience," Seybold stated on the official PlayStation blog post. "We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share."

Today , Seybold said that "it may be a full day or two before we're able to get the service completely back up and running."

PlayStation Network has nearly 70 million registered accounts worldwide. All of the services that need a Playstation Network login are affected, such as : Online Multiplayer, Netflix, and some Downloadable Titles.

Seybold's full statement:

An external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th. Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority.

There is speculation saying that the cause of this may be in fact the famous internet board "4Chan.org", but c'mon, 4 days of shut down. I don't know what could have caused that...
